(Click on the name of the cities to browse through each in detail)

Old Jaipur City is the main attraction and this is because of the huge wall and the pink color that follows everywhere. It is also beautiful to know the reason behind it. The real reason for the huge wall built around the Old Jaipur city can be found in a picture present in Albert Museum Hall.

It was Maharaj Jai Singh who raised a huge wall built of red and pink sandstone to secure the city with seven strong gates in different directions. Each Gate is called using different names. This huge wall is the one that still encircles Old Jaipur.

Later Maharaj Ram Singh ordered the entire city to be painted using the red and pink sandstone color as the symbol of hospitality to decorate Jaipur on the arrival of Prince Of Wales.Till now, the same custom is followed in painting the Old Jaipur.

The main attractions within the Old Jaipur City are the Jantar Mantar, City Palace and the Hawa Mahal.

The Entrance Of Jantar Mantar and Some Of The Instruments Displayed

Jantar Mantar is a place that was built during Maharaja Jai Singh II' s time to get the prediction about time and astrology. It is very interesting to understand the working of different  sundials and astrological instruments.
It is better to have a guide  to understand them clearly.
The Models That Were Constructed Before Designing The Originals  Are Also Displayed Here

There are certain instruments which puzzles even the scientists till now on how to understand it. There  are also instruments used for education where teachers teach and give test for students here.

  • Eatery:There is a small restaurant within the premises.

This is the place where the Maharaj ruled from, after shifting from Amer fort due to water scarcity and other problems. It’s a big palace with many complexes to showcase the history of  Maharajah's time .The Architecture of the entire palace is admirable. One of the complexes showcases  various costumes, weapons, carpets used by the royal families of the olden days. Another enclosed open complex showcases Two very big silver jar(World’s biggest) used by Madho Singh II to take water from his place when he traveled out of our country.

Some Of The Complexes Inside The Palace

One can also have a look at the living rooms of our royal queens of those days in another complex. There are various other complexes within the palace with different names. There is also a temple for Govind dev ji within the palace. A part of the palace is not open to the public and it is privately occupied by the current Jaipur Maharaj. Though the palace is big and there are lots to see, it wasn’t tiresome.
Tip: As there are various complexes ,do take time to read the display stone or board that describes what can be seen at the place to confirm that you visited all the places within the complex.

Hawa mahal:

  • Transit:Less than 10 mins walk from City Palace or Take a Share Auto
  • Ticket: Composite Ticket is Accepted.
  • Duration of the visit: Minimum of 40 minutes including photography.
  • What To See: Architecture of the building, Good view of the city from windows.

This Mahal was built for the Queens to have a look at the city processions without being seen  as they followed purdah system. Excellent Architecture. The backside view of the windows of the mahal from the road is awesome and very popular. Many doesn’t know that it is also good from the inside too.

It is a five storey mahal and slopes (not stairs) take you to different storeys. The building has a center courtyard. It is a two storey building on three sides and five storeys on the fourth side where the walls have many windows to peep through . One can have a peep from those windows to have a look at the city as the real Queens did.

The Inner View Of The Hawa Mahal

Jal Mahal:

  • Transit:15 minutes drive from Hawa Mahal. Auto Fare Rs.80 from old city
  • Ticket: No Ticket
  • Duration of the visit: No Limit.
  • What To be See: Beauty Of the building in the middle of the lake.

This Mahal was built by Maharaja sawai jai Singh ii to spend time with his queens. The mahal is in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. It's a five storey building. It seems the building was initially built on a place which had natural depression and water used to accumulate in the depression.Later , the lake was formed by constructing a dam. Currently, Four Floors are underneath the water and only the uppermost is seen outside. Boating  was allowed and people were able to go near some years back. But now, we can have a look only from the road. Boating  is Not allowed and it’s not even decorated with colorful lights anymore.
So, you can sit relax and enjoy the beauty as much as you wish. You have the option to dress yourself in rajasthani costume and take a picture here.
Note: One can drop here any time on the way to the Forts. As we had planned tightly for the next day, we included it on our list though Jal Mahal was not on our way.

We have planned to visit the forts tommorrow. Click here πŸ‘‰ The Royal Forts Of Jaipur to know about the forts in detail.
