Day1-Wayanad

Nagarhole National Park :

Nagarhole lies on the border of Kerala and Karnataka. So, people traveling to Karnataka, Mysore, Coorg, or Wayanad can visit this sanctuary as a part of their trip.

Bus Boarding Point

What to expect: Deer, Wild Boars, and peacocks are the ones likely to be seen in a safari. Lucky ones may get a sight of a tiger.

Ticket:  Bus and Jeep safaris are available for 300 and 1500 bucks per hour respectively (as of 2015).

Duration: The duration of the safari is one hour. If everything goes well, then the maximum time needed here is 1.5 hours.

Irupu falls:

This falls lies on the border of Wayanad. It is popularly known as Lakshmana Theertham.

Location: 20 minutes drive from Nagarhole. Duration: Minimum of 1.5 hours is required including the trekking part(to and fro). Ticket: 50 Rupees per person(as of 2015).

Lakshmana Theertha has a special mention in Ramayana. People believe that Lord Rama and Lakshmana were around this place during their search for Sita. Lakshman created a river named Lakshmana Theertham to get water to quench the thirst of Rama. This river is assumed to be the source of the falls.

Way To Iruppu Falls - Starting Point Of The Trek

What to expect: Lovely Falls with 20 to 30 minutes of one way trek that includes a nice path, Hanging Bridge, and a scenic view. One can get drenched in water unlike Abbey falls(Coorg).

The Falls During Off-Season

Not to miss: Rameshwara temple on the trek way to Iruppu falls. We did not notice it and we missed it.

Thirunelli:

Thirunelli Temple-Main Deity Lord Maha Vishnu

We reached the temple by 11:30Am.

Location: It is a 1.5 hours drive from Iruppu Falls.

What to expect: A calm place blessed by Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Papanasini, Panchatheertham, Cave Temple Of Lord Shiva are not to be missed.

Duration: Maximum of an hour can easily be spent here. It is believed that Brahma was attracted by the beauty of this place and When he reached the place, he noticed an idol of Lord Vishnu on an Amla tree. He installed it here along with the help of other Dewas. There is a Papanasini stream and Panchatheertham tank by the side of the temple. It is believed that the Panchatheertham tank was once filled with five different rivers. One can also find footprints of Lord Vishnu(Vishnu Padam) at the center of the tank. People say that Lord Vishnu instructed Lord Brahma from this place asking him to install his idol here.

There is a cave temple for Lord Shiva on going further down the Panchatheertham tank. It is a very small cave temple and this temple submerges during the rainy season.

A View Inside The Cave Temple

This temple is believed to be blessed by Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Note: The main temple, Panchatheertham tank, Papanasini, and the cave temple lies within a single campus. Gents must take off their shirts before entering the main temple. There are many small restaurants around the temple to have lunch. There are one or two good restaurant on the way to Kuruva Island.

Kuruva Island:

Kuruvadweep Island is a beautiful place. One can easily spend 3 hours here. I found two things beautiful about this place. One is the way the island is reached and the second is the Kabini river.

Location: It is one hour drive from Thirunelli Temple. What to expect: An interesting bamboo ride(just to cross the river and reach the island), A place close to the nature. Duration: As said above, you can easily spend 3 hours here if you like to be along with nature and enjoy the running water. Ticket: 80/ person, camera charges extra.

Kurvadweep island is accessible only via bamboo rafting. People take you in a bamboo raft to cross the Kabini river and drop you on the Island. Crossing the Kabini river via bamboo raft was quite a good experience.

A Few minutes walk inside the island leads to the Kabini river on the other side. Tourists are allowed to enter the water till a certain limit.

A Small Walk Inside The Island

One of the best places we enjoyed in Wayanad is Kuruvadweep Island.

Banasura sagar Dam:

After 3 hours of enjoyment on Kuruvadweep island, we were very tired when we reached the Banasura sagar dam. It was a 40 minutes ride from Kuruva island.
