Day2-Wayanad

We started the day late. By the time we reached Jain temple in Sultan Bathery by 12, it was closed. We had an exterior look at the temple and moved towards our next sightseeing place.

Jain Temple, Sulthan Bathery

Edakkal Caves:

A Natural Cave which is believed to be used as a shelter by people who lived ages ago.

Location: Half hour drive from the Jain temple.

Ticket: Rs.30/- per head

What to expect: A Big cave with two levels and old Inscriptions on the walls.

Duration: 45 minutes to one hour to climb up the cave, and 20 minutes for the return journey. Reserve 1.5 to 2 hours in total for this place.

One has to walk on a sloping road for a minimum of half an hour, then come the rocky steps and steel stairs (forgot the count, must be around 1000). A minimum of 1-hour walk led to a Big ancient cave. We could find inscriptions on the wall everywhere. If you really want to know how ancient people lived, you can learn a bit here.

Inscriptions On The Wall

Think twice before considering the place if you have elders and small kids with you. My son was 5 years old then. He was enjoying it. So, even though it was a bit difficult, we loved it and enjoyed climbing. It just took 20 minutes for us to reach down the cave.

Though it was good and we were so happy that we visited a cave lived by our ancestors, I feel it would become unworthy without a guide's explanation on those wall inscriptions. So, please opt for a guide.

If you are a history and trekking lover, you will like it a lot.

Kandhanpara falls:

After the lovely but tiresome trek, we had tasty Kerala Parathas, Layered soft parathas in a nearby restaurant. Kanthanpara fall was last on our list for the day.

It is a two-tier Fall. There are two levels from which one can enjoy; Great View from the upper level and get drenched in the lower level of the falls.

Location: It is a half-hour drive from Edakkal Caves.

Duration: Minimum of 1.5 hours.

Kandhanpara Falls- A View From The Top

There were no ticket procedures when we visited it in 2015. It was just a narrow walkway down the hill, to reach the bottom of the falls. It was very thrilling to walk as there was nothing down on our right side except empty space. (We really don't know whether there existed a proper path down the falls at that time). My son enjoyed a lot walking without any fear of falling.

Falls- At The Lower Level

A Place at the top level where one can sit and enjoy

Though it was off-season then, we enjoyed it. The view from the upper level was good. One can sit comfortably and enjoy the flowing water. More facilities are available now and ticket fees are also collected here. Please verify it before reaching this place.

Overall, It is a lovely fall but do not expect too much. You will surely like it.

We were done for the day by 6 Pm.
