Main Temples Near Ernakulam

The Day2 Of our Cochin- Allepey Trip started with the blessings of Lord Vamana Moorthy.

We booked OLA Rental from Gateway Marine Drive for 4 hrs . Started after having our breakfast and we returned for our lunch.

Thirikakara Temple

We traveled towards the Cochin airport to visit two temples among the 108 DivyaDesams. The first was Thirikakara Temple. It is a temple for Lord Vamana Moorthy. The deity was short and was decorated with Sandalwood.

Speciality1: It is believed that this is the place where the king Mahabali was sent to the underworld by the Lord Vamana.

Speciality 2: There are many other sanadhis here and one of the sanadhi to be noted is the Brahmarakshas Sanadhi. There is an interesting story behind the reason for Brahmarakshas Sanadhi here.

Once a farmer prayed the lord and promised to gift a bunch of golden banana to the temple if there was a good yield on his farm. As promised he gifted the golden bananas when there was a good yield. He left the golden bananas at the entrance as discussed with the temple priest. When the priest returned to the place after his bath in the pond, he found the bananas missing. He saw a yogi there and blamed him for it. The people believed it and blamed him too. The priest continued his daily Poojas and noted that the Abhishegam water got stagnated. He found the golden bananas blocking the way. He realized his mistake and searched for the yogi but the yogi cursed the town to lose all its wealth and committed suicide by then. He became Brahmarakshas and started troubling the people. Hence people raised a small Sanandhi here for Brahmarakshas and offered their prayers to escape from his curse. From then on, the Neivaidhyam of the main deity is also offered here.

To be noted: There is a Shiva temple by the side of Lord Vamana Moorthy temple and it is said that one must visit the former before visiting the latter. And, it is also said that the main deity in the Shiva temple is the one prayed by the King Mahabali himself.

We were out by 9:15 and proceeded to Thirumoozhikulam Lakshmana temple which was on our next list.

Thirumoozhikulam:

Lord Lakshman Temple at Thirumoozhikulam is one of the MalaiNadu Divya Desams. He did not give us his darshan  as he was very tired after a ten-day festival which got over the previous day of our visit. The temple was closed early by 10:00. We were 10 minutes late. So we planned to visit the temple again on our return Journey.Though Lakshmanar was tired to give his darshan, we were blessed to receive his prasadhams from the previous day festival. Appam was the Main Prasadham.

We were able to get the darshan on the Day 5 of our trip.

To be Noted: This temple, one among the 108 Divya Desams has to be visited along with other three temples (Lord Ramar, Bharathan, Shathrugan’s). It is said that all the Four temples of the brothers has to be visited in a single day to get the blessing of the Lord. We did not know this ahead and we visited only this particular temple.

The Main deity at this temple had Bow in one hand and arrows behind in a  pouch.

Speciality: The Sthala  Vriksham was slightly different. Three different trees( Mango, Jackfruit and Peepal) had grown bounded together like a single tree.

Karya Siddhi Aanjaneyar:

This temple is on the way to Chotanikkara Temple from Lakshmanar Temple. A very big Aanjaneyar idol welcomed us on entering the temple. The main sanidhi is inside. We hurried inside as it was just five minutes before the closing time (10:30).
We heard that the Anjaneyar would be decorated as different avatars each day but he was dressed as such when we got our darshan.

Speciality: The specialty here is that the devotees perform a 41 days Pooja to get their wishes fulfilled here by offering Tender coconuts. Lots and lots of coconuts were hung in rows by the side of the Sanidhi. This looked different from the normal Hanuman temples.
Got his blessing and left the temple in ten minutes.

Chotanikara Temlpe:
This is a very Popular Temple here. It is often crowded.

Speciality: The main Goddess here is decorated in three forms everyday, as Goddess Saraswathi in the morning, as Goddess Lakshmi in the noon and as Kali in the evening.

We were there by 11:50 in the morning. The Sanadhi opens for noon pooja at12:30 noon. So, there was a very big Queue waiting to pray the Goddess. The Goddess gave us her darshan in the form of Lakshmi.

The temple is divided into mael kaavu and keezh kaavu. The main deity is in mael kaavu and one has to take further steps down to Keezhkaavu Temple where Goddess Badhrakali's Idol was Present. There was a big tree in the middle and many nails were pierced into it. When enquired, we learnt that the temple was famous for chasing the demons out of humans.

People generally visit this temple to get rid of illness and evil spirits. We got her blessing and left the Temple by 12:40
