Day 2-Hassan-Halebedu-Belur-Coorg

We started with Hassan and sticked on to the popular Halebedu and Belur temples . To be honest, a single day is not enough if you want to enjoy the glimpse of all the hoysala architecture temples here. If you are so keen about covering them, do stay at hassan for one or two days and enjoy visiting various Hoysaleshwara temples.
In short:
  • Halebedu:
    • Travel Time: Hassan to Halebedu-45 mins
    • Total Time Spent: 1 hr. (You have got lots to explore in the carvings. So the time spent is purely based on your likings)
  • Belur:
    •  Travel Time: Halebedu to Belur- 30 mins.
    • Total Time Spent: 1 hour and the above said exploration is true even for Belur.
  • Abbey Falls (Madikeri):
    •  Travel Time: 2 hrs from Belur. 20 to 30 minutes walk down to the entrance ( in case of high traffic).
    • Time Spent:1 hour.
    • 20 minutes (down the steps from the entrance) 20 minutes (sightseeing) 20 minutes (climb up the steps).
    • Need to walk more if got struck in traffic. So, ladies, avoid heels please.
    • Overall, It does not look that great in December and it is not worth without viewing it from the hanging bridge. May be December is not the right season to enjoy it.
  • Raja Tomb (Madikeri):
    • Travel Time: 20 minutes drive from Abbey falls.
    • Total Time Spent: 10 to 20 minutes

Halebedu:

We reached Halebedu Hoysaleshwara temple by 9 clk.
1. Way From the entrance 2.Though it looks simple at a single glance, it is not so when you start exploring the carvings 3. A Closer look at the structure
Initially I did not have much interest in visiting. But, the moment I found hidden stories on the stone carvings, I totally got the interest. The carvings were awesome and if you have kids by your side, they might get bored as one has to spend some time in understanding the carvings. It may be a good idea to get aid from the guides to explain you. But, to be honest, even the guides do not explain everything. It solely depends on the self interest in exploring the carvings. So, guide plus self exploration is the best way to understand the carvings. Some of my findings included prahalad story, vaali vadham, the death of gajamuga assuran, ravana lifting Vaikunda and much more.
Prahalad's Story . Each story carved on the rock, is not bigger than the size of a normal pen.

1. Bhishmar Ambu Padukai 2. Churning Of the Ocean 3. Vaali Vadham  ( As said above, these carvings are not bigger than the size of pen) 4. Ravana Lifting Mount Kailash 5. Death Of Gajamuga Asura ( 4 and 5 are bigger carvings)

We were out by 10 and went to two other small temples(digambar jain temple and kedareshwar temple).
Though the other two temples were not popular, it had similar carvings. All together we finished all the three by 10:30 and started towards belur.

Belur:

We reached Belur Chennakesava temple by 11. The temple had similar wonderful carvings and the only one addition here was the Abishegam of the god and goddess. It is still performed here in Belur.
As time was our main constraint, we did not spend more than an hour here. If you have enough time, spend your maximum at Belur Halabedu Temples to explore the carvings. We came out by 12 noon and started our travel towards Madikeri.
Food:We traveled over 1 hr and there were only one or two restaurants on our way. Had our lunch at Ossur restaurant (was good and most of the tourist have food here).

Madikeri:

Abbey falls:
We started from the restaurant by 1:50 and travelled for around 2hours. My god!!!! As it was Christmas time, there was heavy traffic and we had to walk all the way down to Abbey falls.
We got down from the car and started walking around by 3:50 pm. We walked for almost 20 to 30 minutes to reach the entrance. It was a steep road and it was difficult for us to climb. By 4:20 we reached the entrance.
1. Zoom in picture of the falls 2. A click from the steps and among the crowd

And again, we had to climb down few steps to reach the bottom of the falls. It was a good view of the falls but it was not awesome. There are falls that had better view than this. The hanging bridge was by the side. It was closed for repair. Do not forget that it is not a type of falls where many like to get drenched. So, we spent 20 to 30 minutes taking photos and started climbing back the steps again by 04:55.
After a tiresome walk for about 40 minutes, the view of the falls does not seem that great to me. We reached our car by 5:20 and started for the next spot.
Raja tomb:
It did not take us much time to cover tomb. We reached tomb by 5:40.
Raja's Tomb Surrounded by a very big garden

The tomb was surrounded by a beautiful garden and we had a quick glance of the tomb. we started from there in ten minutes by 5:50.
Stay: Finally, we reached our Homestay and took rest after a tiresome day.
